southeast texas regional planning commission logoThe South East Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC) will hold the second Mitigation Action Plan public meeting on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Hardin County Courthouse, Commissioner’s Courtroom, 300 West Monroe, Kountze, Texas 77625.

The meeting will encourage the public’s participation in the risk assessment portion of updating the Hazard Mitigation Action Plans for the South East Texas Region of Hardin, Jefferson and Orange Counties. The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) requires the plans be updated every five (5) years.

The goal of the Mitigation Action Plans is to outline projects within the region that can mitigate/reduce/prevent the loss of life and property as a result of a natural disaster.

The public is encouraged to attend.  For more information, or if special accommodations are needed, please contact Aleta Cappen at acappen@cityofvidor.com or (409) 238-6448.

You can also participate by completing an online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SETRPC_HMAP

The Vidor Lions are currently accepting names for engraving on the military ledgers at the Vidor Lions Veteran’s Park “Fields of Freedom”.

The five large granite ledgers currently in the park include the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine branches of service. In addition the park has a granite ledger listing names of soldiers killed in action (KIA). The Army ledger is limited on the amount of space left for engraving. Once the current Army ledger is full additional application will not be accepted until which time another ledger can be erected.

Request for applications are available by contacting the Vidor Lions club through request at info@vidorlions.org or by calling Joanne Ledger at (409) 828-1322.

Use either contact above if you have any questions.

Applications can also be picked up at Goin Postal on Main Street and the Vidor Public Library on East Boliver Street.

Applications must be accompanied by proof of honorable discharge (i.e. form DD214). On KIA wall engraving proof required of KIA status. Forward the application along with $100 either in check or money order for engraving to Vidor Lions Club, 111 N. Main St. #130, Vidor, Texas. All funds go toward engraving or maintenance of the Veteran’s Park.

Even though the park is in Orange County soldiers listed on the granite ledger do not have to be from Vidor or Orange County.

Donations Enhance Pirate Pride Park

picture of pirate pride park in vidor, texas. shows monkey bars and merry go round

As the result of another successful annual plant sale on April 13, 2016, the Azalea Garden Club of Vidor donated $500 to the City of Vidor Parks Department for playground enhancement at Pirate Pride Park.

Pirate Pride Park is adjacent to the Vidor Public Library at 440 East Bolivar, and is enjoyed by people of all ages. Often parents bring their young children who enjoy the playing area as the adults get their exercise on the park’s ¼ mile asphalt walking track.

With the Azalea Club’s donation, the Park Department is continuing the upgrades to the playground area with a softer ground material called Kiddy Crush Mulch. This toxic-free, approved material is used in many area parks and playgrounds with a goal of increased safety.

Once again Pirate Pride Park is the recipient of the benevolence of numerous volunteers and local residents who are volunteering their time and donating money to make Vidor a better place of all of us.

If you are interested in donating to Pirate Pride Park, please contact Claude Taylor, Park supervisor, at 409-769-0212, extension 3, or by email at ctaylor@cityofvidor.com.
