Vidor City Council accepting applications for Mayor

The Vidor City Council is accepting applications for Mayor. Vidor will have a vacancy of the Mayor's seat due to current Mayor Robert Viator, Jr. taking the oath of office as Orange County Commissioner of Precinct #4 on January 1, 2019, at which time the vacancy will automatically occur. The City Charter requires the City Council to appoint someone to fill the vacancy within ten days. Note, the term of this appointment will be only until the regularly scheduled mayoral election in May 2019.

The qualifications for Mayor are found in Section 3.04 of the Vidor City Charter. The Mayor 1) shall be a resident of the City of Vidor for a period of not less than one year immediately preceding this appointment, 2) shall be a qualified voter of the State of Texas, and 3) shall not be indebted to the City of Vidor. (The complete City Charter is available on the City website: https://cityofvidor.com/depts/forms-and-documents/city-charter.)

Anyone interested in being appointed as Mayor for the remainder of the term should submit: 1) a cover letter expressing one's interest and qualifications, as well as any other pertinent information, and 2) a completed Application of Open Position on the City of Vidor City Council.

Applications are available at Vidor City Hall, 1395 N. Main St., Vidor, TX 77662, during normal business hours of Monday - Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; on the City's website www.cityofvidor.com; or by requesting one via email from City Manager Mike Kunst, mkunst@cityofvidor.com, or City Secretary Vicki Watson, vwatson@cityofvidor.com.

Applicants must insure their cover letters and completed applications are received at Vidor City Hall no later than 5 p.m., Monday, December 31, 2018. Depending on the number of applicants, the City Council anticipates calling a special-called meeting on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 7 p.m. in order to select finalists for further consideration. The names of the finalists will be posted as part of the agenda for the regularly scheduled Council meeting of Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 7 p.m. During this meeting, Council will take comments from the public and interview the finalists. After the interviews are concluded, the Council will select and appoint a new Mayor of the City of Vidor. The new Mayor will then be sworn-in, take his or her seat, and continue with the Council meeting.
